Taking Strides

You’ve probably heard people say, “I’ve got to get my steps in,” or “At least I got some steps.” But how important is it really to get your steps in?

The answer is very. Getting a certain amount of steps each day is a huge contributing factor to weight loss and overall health. It affects your mobility, flexibility, and balance. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends adults should aim for 10,000 steps per day, or 5 miles. Currently, the average American is taking 3,000-4,000 steps a day or 1.5-2 miles. Yikes.

Why are the majority of Americans slacking so much in the step department? It might be due to someone’s job being sedentary. It might be because of the advancement of technology making our lives less physically active. Whatever the reason might be, we need to be more intentional about walking and getting our steps in than ever before. There are lots of ways you can add in physical activity to your normal routine. Here are some options:

  1. Take the stairs instead of elevator or escalator.

  2. Bike to work.

  3. Park further away from your destination and walk the rest of the way.

  4. Take breaks during work to walk around the office or building.

  5. Try new activities, such as dancing, gardening, or bowling.

Start slow and work your way up to more! There are lot’s of different activities you can add into your routine that will assist in getting more steps in.
