The holiday season is here! It’s time to gather with family and friends by a fire and share sweet memories. But memories aren’t the only sweet thing that will be shared.

There’s pie, hot chocolate, cookies, all sorts of delicious food. Holiday food is some of the best, but it can be difficult to stay on track with your fitness goal throughout this season. Just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible!

Going into the holiday season, take some time to set guidelines for yourself. You want to enjoy the treats with everyone else but stay on track with your goals. Here are some tips on you can do that:

  1. Eat Early. Don’t forget to eat breakfast. This will prevent you from overeating later in the day. Breakfast consumption is also associated with better weight management and lower BMI’s.

  2. Stay Hydrated. Drinking water before each meal will help reduce craving and calories when you eat. Choose water over sugary or high-calorie drinks.

  3. Get Active. Find time in between meals to go on walks and get some exercise. This will help keep your metabolism going, burn some calories, and stabilize your mood. It’s also a good way to get in some quality time with loved ones or even a short break for some me time.

  4. Plan It Out. You might be traveling to visit family, so plan your snacks and meals ahead. It can be easy if traveling long distance by car or plane to grab fast food since it’s convenient. Pack snacks and meals ahead of time to stay on track.

  5. Go For It. If you’ve had a tiny portion of dessert but are still dreaming of more, allow yourself a full piece. There are other ways you can cut back, like sugary or alcoholic beverages, and still enjoy your holiday favorites.

  6. Take Stock. When the cravings come, check in with yourself. Are you actually hungry or are you feeling something else? Often time boredom or sadness can mask itself as hunger, so check in before you overeat.

  7. Give Yourself Grace and Have Fun. The holiday season only comes once a year, so enjoy it! Have fun with your family and give yourself grace to have an extra treat.
